If you aren’t familiar with the new trendy term “glow up” it basically means to better yourself. This can be interpreted in many different ways. I think of glowing up as gaining confidence and positivity. Some people might view this in terms of looks, riches, etc. I think glowing up comes from the inside and is focused all on you (who cares what anyone else thinks). YOU DO YOU. So here are some tips I have tried in the past when I was feeling down or off my game.
1. Laugh at everything embarrassing or silly that you do
I guess another way to phrase this would be don’t take yourself too seriously. I remember in high school being so timid and caring so so much what other people thought. Well I’ll let you in on a little secret, no one is really thinking about you that much, sorry. I mean maybe is they like like you (wink wink), but for the most part everyone is so caught up in their own lives they aren’t thinking much about other people. So next time you do something you might usually cringe at and beat yourself up for all day, just laugh at yourself. We are all awkward and weird souls.
2. Treat yourself.
Do it girl. Go get your nails done. Go have a spa day with your BFF. Get that new pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing at anthropology for the last month. I guess what I am getting at here is that it’s ok to put yourself first. A little thing I do to treat myself (which is so silly), is get my soy latte from Starbucks on the weekend. I try to drink tea during the week and treat myself to a Starbucks on the weekend as a small reward (you see, I easily become severely addicted to coffee so if it’s not finals week I try to ease off the addiction when I can). Anyways I love it, so find something that you look forward to once a week.
3. Change something
Sophomore year of college I had thick long dark hair that touched my butt. Sometime in the middle of the year I became bored and wanted to spark up my life and my confidence. So I chopped half of my hair off and died it blonde. AND I FREAKING LOVED IT. Hair, wardrobe, weight, whatever it may be, do something different. It’s a blast I promise.
4. Be extremely friendly to everyone
I mean this is true whether you are looking to “glow up” or not, but laughing with the cashier at trader joes while she scans your items is honestly just the best. Hold doors for the elderly, offer to grab your co-worker a coffee at work when you get up to refill yours, send your grandma flowers spontaneously.. seriously, feeling appreciated by others is the best confidence boost you can get.
5. Go shopping.
Ok Sara if you say so!!! 🙂 I mean don’t go waste your whole pay check but a new dress now and then is exciting (I recommend tracking down your nearest outlet stores)! And you get to look forward to wearing it to your next date or girls night (wine Wednesdays am I right?).
6. Get healthy
Getting in shape and feeding your body the foods it thrives off of is the single best way to gain energy and confidence. So if you haven’t joined that gym or yoga studio you walk by on your way to work everyday, take this as a sign from above to do it! Going off of that, find an exercise routine you like and look forward to. Feeding your body fruits, veggies, and whole grains will increase your energy and your metabolism: win-win!!
7. Increase your intelligence
I happen to be surrounded by very very smart people. My dad went to med school at 19, my brother can solve derivative problems without knowing anything about derivatives, and my boyfriend.. well he seriously just knows everything. Feeling slightly behind sometimes, I decided to educate myself. I started reading a lot, listening to podcasts, and working extra hard in my studies. I would highly recommend “The Daily” podcast to stay up to date with the news and non-fiction books to increase your knowledge about.. well everything.
8. Do something bold
This kinda speaks for itself. Move across the country. Ask your waiter for his number. Cut all your hair off. Find a new job if you hate your current one. Whatever it may be, in the words of Nike: just do it!
9. Remove negativity from your life
I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! Every time you catch yourself having negative thoughts or thinking negatively about another person, try to counteract that with a good thought. Another great way to get rid of negative energy in your life is to get rid of the people or the things that are causing it. If you have a friend that only ever talks about other people or makes you feel bad about yourself, try to see that friend less and less. Easier said than done, trust me I know. But just try.
10. Pick up a new hobby
My favorite new hobby is……..blogging!! (as you can probably tell). But this can be absolutely anything. Yoga, running, writing, journaling, reading, painting, cooking, you name it.
